Welcome to the Social Network of the Humane Foundation, a place to promote Humane Education and the MOGO principle to change the world.

MEET THE MEMBERS OF THE HUMANE FOUNDATION .ORG

MEET JESSICA ARTILES

My name is Jessica Artiles and I am a sophomore at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on Sustainability. I aspire to help change the world, one cause at a time. The Humane Foundation has found a place in my heart and conscience as an opportunity to be a step in the right direction, the direction of changing our mistaken world for the better. My involvement came after an awakening presentation on one of the Foundation's many causes that stirred in me the need to become involved with these efforts. After reorganizing and calibrating past efforts to become a club, I stepped in as President to the Humane Alternative Club at Hialeah High School. As president, I also took the part as liaison between the school community and neighborhood community by outsourcing our Club efforts into the first community meetings of the Humane Foundation. Today, I continue to collaborate on efforts to ensure the Humane Foundation grows to its potential.

HSI and Haitians Working Together

Humane Society International is working with Haitians to overcome the challenges now faced in the wake of the earthquake. One major issue - there's not enough food to go around for all the people, cattle, pigs, horses, other farm animals, and pets. This is their struggle.

'Survivor' Dogs Home From Haiti

Dachshunds Bella and Deiter survived Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Now they've survived another disaster - the earthquake in Haiti. They're both safe now, back in the US with their family.

HSUS, HSI Helping Haiti's Animals

The HSUS and HSI are in Haiti now, assessing the welfare of the animals in the country. There are many stray dogs with nowhere to go, so we are doing what we can to make sure they're safe, healthy, and well nourished.

Two Lucky Dogs Out of Haiti

Found roaming in the streets of Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina hit, these two lucky dogs were adopted. Their new family moved to Port-au-Prince, and yet again, they found themselves alone after the earthquake hit. Their family had to leave them behind, but thanks to Humane Society International, they weren't alone for long.

Love Not Enough in Alabama

In Blount County, Alabama, a man who started with the best of intentions rescuing animals in need realized his love was turning into neglect. He was no longer able to care for the dogs and cats, and surrendered them to local authorities. The conditions rescuers found them in made the mission all the more difficult.

Kate Moss Gives Meat-free Mondays a Try

Kate_Moss.jpg
img2.timeinc / CC

According to The Sun Kate Moss has promised her longtime pal, Stella McCartney, that she'll stop eating meat on Mondays (I know what you're thinking, but apparently Kate does actually eat).

I'm often the one saying, "Let's give so and so the benefit of the doubt," but in Kate's case, I'm just not sure. One would think that after being friends with the brilliant and fabulous Stella for as long as she has, she'd have stopped eating flesh and wearing fur a long time ago.

I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope that she decides to give flesh the boot for good, and finally realizes how callous she looks in those awful furs of hers.

Top Five Super Bowl Ads

Take it from someone who uses the Super Bowl as a bathroom break to get back to the main-event (commercials!): This year, the ads that were shown during the big game made history with their creative alternatives to live animals. Check out our five animal-friendly favorites:

  • "Whale of a Tale," Bridgestone:Three friends. One animatronic whale. Millions of happy viewers. Bridgestone also gets extra kudos from us for recently banning the use of endangered animals in all its commercials!
  • "Timothy Richman," Cars.com: The pros of animatronic tiger cub birth: clean, cute, and pain-free. The cons of animatronic tiger cub birth? We can't think of any.
  • "Finding Beaver," Monster.com: Leave it to this (CGI) beaver ... to play the fiddle? Hoedown, here we come!
  • "Squirrel," Honda: Why can't all hoarders be this sleek, adorable, and (faux) furry?
  • "Underdog," Doritos: We yelled "Holla!" when this taunted dog flipped the tables and put the shock collar on the man. Payback is simply delicious.

Animatronics have sure come a long way since the Country Bear Jamboree. We need to get Monster.com on the Punxsutawney Phil case stat!

What was your favorite Super Bowl ad?

Chasing Ronald Out of Town

Let me be the first to congratulate VegTerps, the student animal rights group at the University of Maryland, on winning this year's Libby Award for "Best Student Group!" The honor is well-deserved.

Even though they've existed for less than a year, VegTerps has made every single UMD student aware that the McDonald's location in their Student Union has got to go—at least until the company switches to controlled-atmosphere killing, as PETA has called for. Their high-profile campaign has garnered thousands of petition signatures, endorsements from PETA vice presidents, and captivated the attention of the student body.

Most recently, the group whipped out their own personal chicken costume, and handed out flyers all over campus about why Ronald McDonald needs to get the boot. Check out some pictures from their outing, as well as this student-produced report about the campus campaign!

Make sure to congratulate VegTerps below on their fantastic work so far this year!

5 Questions with Stereos

I don't know what it is about Canadian bands lately, but I have another 5 Questions blog with a band from north of the border. peta2, meet Stereos! These guys caught my eye the minute I checked them out. They're quickly making a name for themselves in Canada, and now I'm stoked to let you guys in on who I think is the next big thing! Here is drummer Aaron Verdonk in his own words ...

Stereos.jpg

What prompted you to become vegetarian? Were there any bands, books, etc. that influenced your decision
Two words—peer pressure. Well, more "peer education." I was involved in the music scene in high school and several of my older friends already were vegan. They showed me the "Meet Your Meat" [video] one afternoon and I was over meat that evening. I think Propagandhi was the first vegan band I knew that I loved as a teenager that spoke openly about going and being vegan, but it didn't influence my decision, just reinforced it.

What are some of your favorite vegetarian and/or vegan foods?
The Tofurky products are by far my favourite vegan items. Some friends of mine found a restaurant in Toronto that serves vegan chicken wings, and I would happily eat them every day for the rest of my life.

Of all of the major animal rights issues, are there any that are particularly close to your heart?
It's a tossup between animal testing and dog fighting. Dog fighting is such an insane notion to me that even discussing it enrages me. It's too bad the only consequence for promoting it is getting your own TV show.

If a fan were to approach you with questions about how to get involved with animal rights, what advice would you give him or her?
I would say to get in contact with PETA, they know more than I do. ;)

What do you guys have coming up that we can be looking forward to?
We are going to be on tour for most of this year, which is the best part of being in a band. Hedley are taking us out on our first arena tour so that's very exciting for the band. I am just hoping that 2010 is half as amazing as 2009 was for us.

Thanks Aaron! Be sure to check out Stereos' website for tour dates near you!

One Minute Mission: Don't be a Heartbreaker!

How can being cute help animals? Easy!

Every year, countless (literally—the government doesn't even count the number of mice and rats killed in animal tests, considering them too unimportant and expendable) mice and rats, who are the most common victims in animal testing, are blinded, poisoned, and killed for things like lipstick, hairspray, and soap.

Pointless? Yep. But you can help by always buying cruelty free products and by telling all of your friends that animal testing breaks hearts!

This Valentine's Day, use these "unfairly cute" images to help raise awareness against animal testing ... and earn points while you're at it!
  • On February 14th, set your Facebook, Twitter, or MySpace status to "Don't be a Heartbreaker this Valentine's Day! http://bit.ly/aWhzy3" and send us a screenshot for 500 points.
  • Set one of the photos above to your MySpace or Facebook photo and send us a screenshot or link for another 1,000 points!
Thanks for speaking up for the little guys!

Stay loud!

The HUMANE FOUNDATION is a nonprofit - nonpartisan - non denominational organization seeking the 501(c)(3) status, committed to world changing through Humane Education.

We don’t only care for the environment but for Global Issues in general. We raise awareness about Social Justice; Cultural Influences and Pressures; Environmental Responsibility and Sustainability; and the Ethical Treatment of Animals. We then explore solutions and alternatives that help minimize our negative planetary footprint, towards people, animals, and the environment.

We work from the bottom up, determining how the Global Issues are manifested in our local communities so that we can find solutions on a local level. The Humane Foundation is one of the organizations that together with millions more all over the world, constitute what author and scientist Paul Hawken describes “the biggest movement the Earth has ever seen”.

We welcome students, teachers, housewives, professionals of diverse backgrounds, people from various religious denominations, and anyone who likes to participate in our umbrella organization to grow together and transform our communities and our world.

We are about personal growth, education, community service, activism, and volunteerism. We meet at schools, community centers, local parks, churches, hotels, restaurants, homes. We invite guest speakers, we plan events, we do arts and sciences contests, we organize book reading programs, movie debates, and much more.

The mission of The HUMANE Foundation is:

1- To Promote a healthy lifestyle that improves our physical, mental, and spiritual health.

2- To inform and educate people about the power of Humane Education for personal growth and world change.

2- To Raise awareness about the environmental impact, as well as the harm and suffering of people and animals behind the products and services we consume every day, so that people can make more compassionate and ethical consumer choices.

4- To Participate in community service and education projects that help turn the community into a safer, more just, greener, sustainable, compassionate, and humane place for its human and non human inhabitants.

We believe that informed individuals have better chances to choose living their lives in a way that is best for themselves, others, animals, and the environment. By doing this, those individuals will be better equipped to participate in the process of restoration, conservation, and preservation, of our fragile world.

Developed by Zoe Weil author and founder of the International Institute of Humane Education, MOGO, (short for “most good) is a principle to live by. By making MOGO choices every day, we can lead a compassionate life on a personal level that can make a difference to the world at large.

The MOGO principle is based on a simple premise: when we do the most good and the least harm in our daily choices, acts of citizenship, community work, and volunteerism, we create a life of inner peace while contributing to the building of a peaceful, sustainable world for all.

The 2009 National Award Winner as Best Practice in Character Education "The Humane School Initiative" together with the Humane Alternative Club, now The "Humane Youth Honor Society", are our ways to bring Humane Education to the school in a dynamic and practical way. Students identify school issues related to social injustice, the negative ways in which our culture influence youth, acts of animal cruelty, and environmental degradation, then they find available solutions to implement in the schools so that they can help create a Just; Safe; Green; Sustainable, and Humane School Environment.

The Humane Foundation Chapters are community groups seeking to implement the Humane Foundation Programs in their local communities.

While We Are Here is a faith base initiative to invite the communities of faith to participate actively in the transformation of the communities through acts of social justice, environmental responsibility, animal compassion, and ethical consumerism.

>>><< If you are interested in learning more about our foundation and maybe start a group, whereas a school club, a community group, a faith group, a college-university group please contact us and we will provide you with step by step instructions on how to start.

HUMANE FOUNDATION ISSUES

(under construction)

1. HUMAN RIGHTS AND SOCIAL JUSTICE

Human rights are those basic rights that belong to people because they are human beings, regardless of their nationality, race, ethnicity, gender, or religion, and without which people cannot live in dignity. The human rights that are considered by most societies to belong to all people include the rights to life, justice, freedom, and quality. Social justice is the concept that community and state activity should be based on just and equitable treatment of all people regardless of color, race, socioeconomic class, gender, age or sexual preference.

2. THE INFLUENCE OF CULTURE, MEDIA AND CONSUMERISM.

Every day we are bombarded with consumerist publicity that wants to get into our heads and our pockets. Skinny beauty patterns cause people to go under strict diets that may cause them get sick and in many cases lead them to death. Fashion becomes an addiction. Shopping Malls become cathedrals where people find fulfillment in shopping. Shopping beyond our true needs and poor money management skills bring us to an almost eternal debt. Peer pressure pushes people to live and act against their true selves, it pushes people to drink, to get high, to hook up, in order to fit in the group. At the Humane Foundation we raise awareness on how media, peer pressure, and other cultural manipulators try to control our decisions so that we can make informed choices based on proper information.

3. ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT.

Many scientists agree we are living in a critical moment. Mostly man caused environmental problems are sending an alarming alert that if every individual in the planet don’t live in an environmentally responsible and sustainable way, the world we know today maybe quite different in the near future. Global Warming may change the current geographical configuration of our planet. Animal species keep disappearing. Forests continue to be cut destroying entire ecosystems. We continue using home chemicals that reach water streams and oceans contaminating them. The Humane Foundation promotes a sense of environmental responsibility so that our planet can continue sustaining life as we know it.

4. ANIMAL RIGHTS, AND NATURAL HEALTH.

Animal Welfare and Rights Animal welfare involves a respect for and a commitment to the humane treatment of all nonhuman animals, which includes proper housing, adequate nutrition, disease prevention and treatment, responsible care, and humane handling and can include humane euthanasia when necessary. Animal rights are those rights that some people consider to be inherent to animals, which should not be violated by humans, such as using animals for testing cosmetic products. Animal welfare organizations focus on laboratories testing facilities, zoos, moviemaking, domestic animals (e.g. slaughterhouses, feedlots), and pets, with facilities for injured wildlife.

ABOUT HUMANE EDUCATION

Why do we need Humane Education anyways: “In a world in which people are quickly destroying natural resources, abolishing species, and perpetuating warfare; in a world filled with poverty, hunger, racism, bigotry of all kinds, cruelty, and injustice, what could be more important than humane education?” (IIHE, 1999, p. 2)

Here we are willing to talk about: Human Values, NAME CALLING, Equality, DRUGS, culture, SOLAR and WIND POWER, animal experimentation, PERSONAL GROWTH, critical thinking, EDUCATION, ethical judgment, PLANETARY CITIZENSHIP, justice and rights, GAY, harassment, TEACHERS, consumerism, VALUES, BELIEFS AND PERSPECTIVES, prejudice and discrimination, LOVE, environmentalism, SUICIDE, DATING, animal protection, VEGETARIANISM, culture and media, GLOBAL WARMING, values, PEER PRESSURE, humane lifestyle, ALTERNATIVE FUTURES, responsibility, MODERN SLAVERY, pregnancy, DARFUR... you name it, we talk about it.

Humane Educator's Toolbox: Exploring the Roots of Youth Violence

There's no shortage of violence against youth in the U.S. But, what are the causes and how can we as educators, students, parents and activists best respond proactively to such a tragedy and help nurture systems and conditions that allow youth to grow into happy, humane citizens and changemakers?

Three organizations in Chicago (Project NIA, The Chicago Freedom School and Teachers for Social Justice), along with many volunteers, have created a curriculum guide to analyze the root causes of youth violence and to develop positive solutions: Something is Wrong: Exploring the Roots of Youth Violence. (pdf)

The 350-page guide is divided into several sections, including:
  • Understanding Oppression
  • Types of Violence Encountered by Young People
  • Artivism
  • Youth-led Research and Organizing
  • Curricular Resources
The lesson plans include a mix of discussions, readings, film viewings, interactive explorations, and critical thinking and analysis, as well as opportunities for students to engage in changemaking in their communities. The guide also includes plenty of useful resources and suggestions.

There's enough useful material here to last an entire school year, so be sure to download a copy and look for ways to integrate these lessons and concepts into your own teaching.

I'm a Delegate From Surry, Maine

In my book, Most Good, Least Harm, I have a chapter on "Activism, Volunteerism, and Democracy." My contention is that in order to create a more sustainable, peaceful, and humane world, we not only need to make personal choices that do the most good and the least harm and choose work and careers that contribute to more restorative systems, but we also need to participate fully as changemakers and that means being active, of service, and a full participant within our democratic systems.

I’ve been an activist for half of my life and a volunteer in many capacities since college, most significantly in my full-time, unpaid role as the president of the Institute for Humane Education, but my participation in our democratic system has been meager. True, I can’t remember having ever missed an election, but voting once a year is hardly full participation in democracy.

So last Sunday, I headed to my town municipal building for our caucus, committed to be a more active member of my community and more politically involved. I was under the mistaken impression that we’d be caucusing to determine our gubernatorial candidate. I spent the morning reading all the websites of our candidates and contacted a friend who worked with one of them to get his opinion, so I felt reasonably prepared. But it turns out we have a primary for that (that’s how uninformed I was), and this was not the purpose of our caucus. There were fewer than 25 of us there (in a town of 1,500). I quickly found out why. The purpose of the caucus was to introduce some local candidates to the community, sign some petitions so that candidates could run for office, and elect people for various civic roles. With so few people in the room, it was hard not to wind up with a role.

I was asked to serve as a delegate at the Maine Democratic Convention in May. I hemmed and hawed. I talked about my busy travel schedule and my uncertainty about whether I’d be able to attend. I asked what I would do as someone who might in fact be supporting the Green candidate rather than the democratic candidate (I’m a registered Democrat in order to participate in caucuses and primaries, but I’m really a philosophical Green Independent). I was offered many reassurances. I said yes.

So here I am, finally practicing this piece of what I’ve preached and trying my hand at the political process with more commitment than an annual vote. Wish me luck!

Film Explores Our Culture's Hypersexualization of Children

"I'm absolutely appalled to see that we are stealing childhood away from children." ~ Chislaine Cloutier, Elementary school principal

"The real damage to girls is that they're overinvesting in image instead of developing real interests and developing unique identities, and it's not just their sexual relationships that will be affected by that, but their accomplishments and their feelings about themselves and what makes them worthwhile as human beings later on in life." ~ Sharon Lamb, author of Packaging Girlhood

We've blogged about the sexualization of children before. It's a growing problem that concerns a lot of parents, educators and citizens -- and children themselves. Marketers are targeting younger and younger kids with messages that women and girls have to be thin, "hot" and sexy, for example. There are several helpful resources out there, but a fairly new one that's come to my attention is from Canadian filmmaker Sophie Bissonnette. Her 2007 documentary, Sexy, Inc.: Our Children Under Influence (35 minutes, in French and English) looks at the hypersexualization of children -- and its influence on their lives and behavior.

The film includes interviews of educators, psychologists and others who work to help children, offers examples of products, ads and messages, and shares the opinions of young people themselves about how they feel about these images and messages, and how such overwhelming influences are affecting their own visions of themselves and others. Although the film touches on messages about boys, most of the focus is on girls.

Note that the documentary includes mature images, topics and language, so be sure to ensure it's appropriate for your audience.

There's also a downloadable (pdf) facilitation guide available.

The sexualization of our children -- especially of our girls -- has become so common place, that, as one teen girl in the film says "You shouldn't look at a picture of a naked woman and feel nothing." It's important that we as educators, parents and citizens raise our youth with healthy concepts of identity, relationships and sexuality, as well as with critical thinking skills that will give them power over the media and messages. It's also essential that we work to change these systems that are so destructive to our children and our society.
